Prayer for Pope Francis

14 Mar

Newly elected Pope Francis appears on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica after being elected by the conclave of cardinals, at the Vatican

Lord,

make Pope Francis

an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let him sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

 O Divine Master,

grant that he may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that he receives;
it is in pardoning that he is pardoned;
and it is in dying that he is born to eternal life.

 Amen

    Hi there! I was wondering if you know who wrote this prayer? We would like to use it on a prayer card.

    It is the traditional “Prayer of St. Francis.” I simply changed the wording of the traditional prayer from the “first person singular” (me) and the “first person plural” (we) to the “third person singular” (Pope Francis/him), in order to make it into a prayer directly for him.
